What is the difference between ruh, attar and essential oil?

Ruh oils are pure, undiluted steam or hydro-distilled floral essences — the highest concentration possible. A true Ruh Gulab, for example, contains only pure rose essence captured directly during distillation. Attars are natural perfumes where a botanical essence (flower, resin, or wood) is distilled into a base of sandalwood oil using the traditional deg and bhapka method in Kannauj, India. They are long-lasting and alcohol-free. Essential oils are typically extracted via steam distillation and contain the concentrated aromatic compounds of a plant. They are often used in aromatherapy and diluted before use.

How do I use these attars and ruh oils?

For personal use: apply a small drop (1-2 drops is sufficient) to pulse points: wrists, neck, behind ears. These are concentrated oils and a little goes a long way. For deity worship: apply gently to the deity's garments, flower garlands, or offering items. Always consult with a pujari or refer to your temple's deity worship guidelines.

Do they have an expiry date?

Pure attars and ruh oils, when stored properly, do not expire in the traditional sense. Many actually improve with age, like fine wine. Store them in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid exposing to air for extended periods by keeping the cap tightly closed. For best quality, we recommend using within 3-5 years of purchase, though properly stored oils can last decades.
